Montenegro holds significant clean energy potential

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to a comprehensive national study conducted by The Nature Conservancy and Eco-Team, Montenegro holds significant potential for the development of renewable energy sources in areas with low impact on environmental and social values.

As European countries simultaneously seek answers to the climate and biodiversity crises, the focus is increasingly shifting from the question of whether to accelerate renewable energy development to how to do so in a sustainable manner.

“The new study conducted in Montenegro shows that it is possible to simultaneously strengthen energy security, protect nature, and respect the needs of local communities through careful planning, data-driven decision-making, and the early integration of environmental, social, and economic criteria,” the two organizations and the Ministry of Energy and Mining stated in a joint press release.

The comprehensive national study shows that Montenegro has more than 16 gigawatts (GW) of solar and wind energy potential that can be developed with a low level of conflict with environmental protection and social interests.

This potential could enable an accelerated and sustainable energy transition while preserving biodiversity and ensuring balanced land use.

The study was developed with the support of an Advisory Board, whose work included contributions from relevant government ministries, international financial institutions, and the Energy Community Secretariat through data sharing, process monitoring, as well as verification and validation of findings.
