Domestic production needs stronger support from the state and the market

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The Chamber of Commerce of Montenegro (PKCG) believes that, despite positive performance in several production segments, Montenegro’s agriculture and agri-food sector continues to face numerous structural challenges that require a coordinated response from the state and all participants in the food production and supply chain.

At a meeting of the Agriculture and Food Industry Association Board, members reviewed the sector’s performance in the first half of the year, the implementation of the IPARD III programme, and opportunities for businesses to participate in the University of Montenegro’s, “Scholarships for the Best. Jobs with the Best” scholarship programme.

Chairman of the Board Milutin Djuranovic said the sector had delivered encouraging results, primarily due to increased domestic production and higher milk procurement, but noted that the recent surplus milk crisis demonstrated how vulnerable domestic production remains without adequate processing capacity and secure markets.

He added that it was unacceptable for domestic producers to be forced to dispose of milk while dairy products were being imported.

Djukanovic also highlighted the importance of the Buy Local campaign, which promotes public awareness of the importance of purchasing locally produced goods.

He said consumers can make a significant contribution to the survival of domestic farms and the development of Montenegro’s agricultural sector through their purchasing choices.
