Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Members of Parliament have adopted amendments to the Law on Internal Trade, proposed by the Europe Now Movement (PES), thereby guaranteeing a non-working Sunday in retail.
A total of 62 MPs voted on the proposed amendments. All 62 supported the legislative proposal, with no votes against or abstentions.
MP Milos Pizurica of PES said during the debate that he believes that support for the proposed amendments gives great hope to retail workers and employees in other sectors that their rights will progress rather than be lost or stagnate.
In late January, the Constitutional Court of Montenegro ruled to repeal Article 35a of the Law on Internal Trade on the grounds of unconstitutionality. That article had prescribed a ban on retail operations on Sundays and on national and other public holidays. The decision was officially published in the Official Gazette on 12 February, which currently allows retailers to operate on Sundays.
Following the Constitutional Court’s decision, the PES parliamentary group submitted a request for an extraordinary session of Parliament to amend Article 35a, while additional changes were made in the meantime through amendments.
