Parental leave for mothers to remain 12 months, two for fathers

Podgorica, (MINA) - At the proposal of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Dialogue, the Government established on Thursday the amendments to the Labor Law, providing for parental leave of 14 months from the day of childbirth.

According to the press release issued following the Government session, the adopted amendments stipulate that parental leave for mothers will remain 12 months, while an additional two months will be reserved for fathers, as a non-transferable part of parental leave.

“At the same time, it is envisaged that the 14-month parental leave will apply from the day of Montenegro’s accession to the European Union, in order to ensure full implementation and transposition of EU Directive 2019/1158 of the European Parliament and the Council of June 20, 2019 on work-life balance for parents and carers”, the press release says.

The Government said that the adopted amendments are the result of intensive communication between the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Dialogue with the European Commission.
