Montenegro not ready for opening of Chapter 27

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is still not ready to open Chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Chante, representatives of the NGO Green Home argue, adding that the area of waste management remains the biggest challenge in this policy.

Milica Kandic of the Green Home noted that Chapter 27 is also one of the most financially demanding chapters in the EU accession process.

“Regardless of this fact, environment and climate change are not on the government’s list of priorities, as confirmed by the European Commission’s latest report on Montenegro, which largely corresponds with the shadow report drafted by the Coalition 27,” Kandic told Mina.

She recalled that Montenegro presented its negotiating position for Chapter 27 in January, which, according to her, should be seen as a great success.

“Montenegro is not ready to open Chapter 27. In the year when the opening of the Chapter 27 is expected and when a number of regulations need to be adopted in order to fully harmonize the domestic legislation with the EU laws, the environmental budget is €895,099, less than the year before, which tells us that environment is not on the government’s list of priorities,” Kandic noted.
