Fiscal strategy produces expected results

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Prime Minister Dusko Markovic and Head of the Mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for Montenegro Srikant Seshadri agreed that implementation of the Fiscal Strategy the Government had adopted two years ago was successful and that it was producing good and expected results.

At today’s meeting in Podgorica, Markovic and Seshadri concluded that the maintenance of fiscal discipline remained the Government’s priority for the future period.

“This Government will fulfill all obligations defined by our Fiscal Consolidation Programme, based on the citizens’ needs and development requirements,” said Markovic.

According to a press release issued by the Government, Markovic and Seshadri agreed that, in the previous two years, the economic growth had exceeded the expectations of international experts.

“They said that such a high base was a challenge for this year and the upcoming period, particularly after the finalization of construction of the priority section of the Bar-Boljare motorway,” the press release says.

In this context, Markovic reiterated Montenegro’s commitment to creating all prerequisites for development of both planning and financial elements necessary for further motorway construction on the basis of a sustainable solution.

The IMF delegation stated that it would focus on the pension reform, optimization of the public sector and full harmonization of the national tax system with the European Union standards.
