Chapters 1 and 2 bring significant benefits for citizens and businesses

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Negotiating chapters 1 and 2, covering the free movement of goods and workers, will open up the vast European market to Montenegro, enabling domestic products to compete across the EU and allowing Montenegrin citizens to exercise employment-related rights without discrimination based on nationality.

The head of the negotiating working group for Chapter 1, Dragan Vukcevic, said the chapter covers all goods, both industrial and agricultural.

“In simple terms, the free movement of goods means access to the European Union’s single market. In other words, whatever we produce here, provided we meet the requirements of Chapter 1, can be placed on the EU single market without additional customs duties or any other barriers,” Vukcevic told Mina-business agency.

He explained that Montenegro, with a population of around 620,000, will gain access to a market of 500 million people.

The head of the negotiating working group for Chapter 2, Ivana Sucur, said that the free movement of workers is one of the EU’s four fundamental freedoms.

“For that reason, the importance of this chapter is exceptional and reflects the very idea on which the EU was founded – the exercise of these four freedoms,” Sucur told Mina-business.

Montenegro is expected to close Chapter 2 at the Intergovernmental Conference in Luxembourg on Monday.
