US Congress members call for support of Montenegro’s EU accession
Washington, (MINA) - Republican and Democratic congress members have submitted a resolution, requesting from President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to support Montenegro’s EU accession.
According to draft resolution, to which the Radio Free Europe had access, the congress members call on Trump and Rubio to work closely with the government of Montenegro.
The resolution was prepared by Republican Congressman Mike Turner and Democrat Shelley Pingree and was submitted for consideration to the House Foreign Affairs Committee in mid-July.
The draft resolution emphasizes that Montenegro “plays a strategic role in the Alliance’s Balkan mission, despite Russia’s efforts to keep Montenegro out of NATO”.
The resolution also underscores Montenegro’s progress, with the assistance of U.S. institutions, in combating corruption, transnational organized crime, and hybrid threats.
The congress members call on U.S. authorities to work closely with the Montenegrin government under the Framework for Countering Foreign Manipulation.
“The U.S. encourages the government and institutions of Montenegro to prioritize necessary reforms and measures for EU membership, as well as efforts to promote peace and prosperity in the Western Balkans”, the document reads.
Former Montenegrin head of diplomacy and ambassador to Washington, Srdjan Darmanovic, told RFE that support for the resolution would be logical for two reasons - because Montenegro is a NATO ally and because the US supports the enlargement policy.
