Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The Europe Now Movement (PES) parliamentary group has submitted an initiative to Parliament to hold a control hearing with the Chief and Special State Prosecutors, following the decision by the prosecutor’s office to dismiss the criminal charges in the Telekom case.
“We believe the public has been denied adequate explanations for why one of the greatest scandals in Montenegro’s recent history was not prosecuted – a case that received a guilty verdict from U.S. judiciary authorities, for which documents were provided to us over ten years ago,” PES stated in a press release.
The decision of the prosecutor’s office has raised serious concern among citizens. According to PES, the case has long been cited as an example of high-level corruption with international implications and was also linked to the closing of Chapters 23 and 24 in Montenegro’s EU accession negotiations.
PES added that the fight against corruption is non-negotiable and that there can be no rule of law or European future for Montenegro without impartial and efficient prosecutors.
“For this reason, we expect prosecutors to provide clear and convincing explanations during the hearing, and for Parliament to have the opportunity to review their work on this case,” the press release concluded.
