Montenegro Pride: It’s time to take to the streets

 

Podgorica, (MINA) - The fight for freedom and equality requires perseverance and unity, speakers at the Montenegro Pride in Podgorica said on Saturday and requested the adoption of the Law on Legal Recognition of Gender Identity.

As Vijesti daily reports, after gathering in front of the Parliament of Montenegro, the participants marched through the streets of Podgorica and the event passed without incident.

The activist of the Spektra Association, Jovan Ulicevic, said that the time has come for action and taking to the streets.

“Pride is not the only protest in the country. I sincerely believe that the time of long speeches is coming to an end and the time has come to take to the streets and take action”, Ulicevic said.

Representative of Queer Montenegro, Ali Erdogan said that in many countries the queer community does not have the opportunity to gather freely.

He added that every person deserves to love without fear, while the crowd chanted “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.

Executive director of Queer Montenegro, Stasa Bastrica, emphasized that the Law on Legal Recognition of Gender Identity based on self-determination and the full implementation of the national LGBT strategy have not yet been realized.

The Pride was attended by, among others, Minister of Human and Minority Rights Fatmir Gjeka, Head of the European Union Delegation in Montenegro Johann Sattler, Protector of Human Rights and Freedoms Sinisa Bjekovic, Vice President of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) and Member of Parliament Ivan Vukovic.
