Mandic announces key discussions on election of Constitutional Court judges

Podgorica, (MINA) – Parliament Speaker Andrija Mandic announced important discussions among parliamentary groups regarding the election of judges of the Constitutional Court to take place on Monday evening.

“I have already announced that the Constitutional Court judges will be elected, that we will unblock the process and send an important message, primarily to the citizens of Montenegro, that we will have the Constitutional Court at full capacity capable of making decisions”, Mandic told Radio Television Niksic.

He stressed that it is an important message not only to the domestic public, but also to the international community, given Montenegro’s goal to become the next EU member.

“It is a message that we are working hard to meet all the requirements that recommend us for EU membership, and to be accepted into that community in a dignified and acceptable manner”, said Mandic, RTNK reports.

He expressed confidence that the Constitutional Court judges would be elected, adding that the only question is whether it will happen on Tuesday or in a month.

“Discussions among the parliamentary groups will be key. We have two candidates proposed by the Parliament and one by the President of Montenegro”, said Mandic.

He recalled that a two-thirds majority in the Parliament, or 54 votes, is required for the election of Constitutional Court judges in the first round.

“But even if we don’t have 54, we will have a new vote in a month, for which a three fifths majority will be needed, that is, 49 votes by MPs”, added Mandic.
