DPS presents non-paper in Brussels on developments in Montenegro and the region

Podgorica, (MINA) - The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) presented in Brussels a non-paper on the situation in Montenegro and the region which, according to head of the party’s parliamentary group Andrija Nikolic, emphasizes that the current government’s actions significantly diverge from its polished pro-European rhetoric.

Nikolic said that, together with Chair of the EU Integration Committee Ivan Vukovic, he had a series of meetings in Brussels with key interlocutors from the European Parliament, the European Commission, the European Council, as well as representatives of several think tanks.

“We presented to our interlocutors a non-paper on the situation in Montenegro and the region, which underscores that the current government’s activities significantly deviate from its polished pro-European rhetoric, and expresses concern over increasingly frequent attacks by the authorities on the media, the civil sector and MEPs”, Nikolic said.

He remarked that they also presented the concerning developments in the region, where the influence of autocratic regimes that fuel nationalism and revive the sentiments that had led to the most recent conflicts is growing.

“We called on our partners from Brussels to increase their presence, engagement and communication with representatives of pro-European political forces from the opposition and respected civil society organizations so that the common goal, Montenegro EU’s membership by the end of this decade, can be truly achieved”, Nikolic concluded.
