Complete Constitutional Court key to EU integration

Complete Constitutional Court key to EU integration

Podgorica, (MINA) – Fully constituted Constitutional Court is of key importance for Montenegro’s EU accession, it was stated during the meeting between the President and judges of that court and European Justice Commissioner Michael McGrath.

President of the Constitutional Court Snezana Armenko said that McGrath’s visit to Montenegro represents a strong confirmation of joint commitment and firm determination to achieve the country’s strategic goal, full EU membership.

Armenko, according to the press release from the Constitutional Court, informed McGrath that the Court has fewer than 2,000 cases in work, despite covering nine competencies prescribed by the Constitution.

McGrath, according to the press release, welcomed the achieved results in terms of the number of resolved cases and the reduction of the duration of proceedings before the Court, when it comes to constitutional appeals.

“McGrath and the judges agreed that in the coming period it is necessary to strengthen the Court’s independence”, the press release said.

The meeting also discussed the importance of respecting and enforcing the Constitutional Court’s decisions, which is crucial for the rule of law on the country’s EU path.
