Becic: New legislation aimed at tightening requirements for firearm ownership

 

Podgorica, (MINA) – The goal of the new Law on Weapons is to tighten the requirements for obtaining weapons, improve record-keeping, reduce misbuse and improve public safety, said Deputy Prime Minister Aleksa Becic.

 

Speaking in the Parliament, responding to the question by Democrats’ MP Dusko Stijepovic about the key changes introduced by the new Weapons Act, Becic said that the work on this piece of legislation has lasted for more than a year.

 

He said that the EC has given the green light to the law, but that they are willing to improve it further if necessary.

 

According to Becic, the intention is to improve record-keeping, tighten requirements for obtaining firearms and introduce stricter sanctions.

 

“Among the amendments to the requirements for acquiring weapons permits is raising the minimum age for firearm ownership from 18 to 21 years, reducing the validity period of firearm licnses from ten to five years, increasing the list of criminal and misdemeanor offenses that disqualify individuals from obtaining a license”, added Becic.
