Zivkovic: DPS to leave Electoral Reform Committee if security laws are put to vote

Podgorica, (MINA) - The Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) will leave the Comprehensive Electoral Reform Committee if the laws on the National Security Agency (ANB) and internal affairs are put to the vote, said the party’s leader Danijel Zivkovic, adding that the opposition wants a genuine debate on the proposed laws.

Speaking at the press conference, Zivkovic said that leaving the committee would be only the first step, and that if the parliamentary majority continues to abuse the Parliament, they will also block its work.

Zivkovic said that the opposition wants exchange of views on the laws on ANB and internal affairs, and that the government wants is attempting to take a shortcut to turn Montenegro into a police state, RTCG portal reports.

According to him, there was no agreement at the Collegium to hold a debate on those two laws, but only to vote on previously discussed topics.

“Those who want to turn Montenegro into a police state, where the services are misused for the needs of one party and eavesdropping on citizens, were in a hurry”, Zivkovic pointed out.

He added that not all amendments had yet been delivered.

“The discussion should have been postponed for three days, but someone decided to proceed in this way”, added Zivkovic.

He believes that this is a defeat of democracy, fundamental human rights, but also a defeat of the parliamentary majority itself.
