Zenovic: Montenegro institutionally consolidated and ready to complete negotiations

Podgorica, (MINA) – Montenegro is institutionally consolidated, politically focused and administratively ready to close all remaining negotiation chapters by the end of the year, said Chief EU Negotiator Predrag Zenovic.

During the Friday session of the parliamentary European Integration Committee, he presented the semi-annual report on Montenegro’s EU-related activities for the period July-December last year, as well as the quarterly report for the period October-December.

Zenovic said that the semi-annual report confirms the continuity of reforms, while the quarterly report demonstrates their intensification, with increased legislative activity and political dialogue at the highest level.

According to him, Montenegro is not a country waiting for a European perspective, but one that actively and decisively realizes that perspective.

“The results from the second half of last year show that we are institutionally consolidated, politically focused and administratively ready to close all the remaining chapters by the end of this year”, said Zenovic.

He recalled that at the end of last year, the formation of an ad hoc working party for the drafting of the Montenegro’s Accession Treaty was announced, stating that this political signal from EU member states has since been implemented.

According to Zenovic, the first meeting of the working party was held, which represents “an important historical date for the entire European path of Montenegr”".

He said that he expects the work on the Accession Treaty to be completed shortly after the closure of the final negotiation chapter.

“My expectation, effort and hope is that it will not be much later than the last negotiation chapter is closed, so that our ambition to become the 28th member in 2028 can still be achieved”, Zenovic said.

He praised the cooperation between the Parliament and the Government in the process of adopting acts important for Montenegro’s European path, stressing that strong institutional coordination is key to achieving the country’s European goals.
