Wizz Air opens base in Podgorica

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air has opened its base at Podgorica Airport, sending a strong message of confidence in the country, Prime Minister Milojko Spajic said.

He noted that, after Air Montenegro, Wizz Air has become the second airline with a base in Montenegro.

“This is also a continuation of the policy we have promoted together with our European partners, when we said that the goal is to connect Montenegro more strongly with the European Union and the rest of Europe. This is the first major step,” Spajic said at today’s formal opening ceremony of the company’s base at Podgorica Airport.

According to him, the launch of 17 new routes will contribute to an increased number of tourists, while also creating important opportunities for businesses and citizens.

Executive Director of Airports of Montenegro Roko Tolic said that this is a very important day, as well as a turning point in operations and an ambition that is now becoming a reality.

He thanked Prime Minister Milojko Spajic for his direct involvement in the negotiations, which lasted two years.

“Now is the time for momentum, and without singling anyone out, it is clear that we are working hand in hand with the ministries of transport and tourism. I am grateful to these two ministries, especially since in the previous period we set certain infrastructure improvements for next year,” Tolic said.

Wizz Air Director Roland Tischner said that today marks an important milestone for both Wizz Air and Montenegro.

“We are going to station two of our most modern Airbus A321neo aircraft here, with first one starting now and the second following in June,” Tischner said.

He added that 17 new routes will connect Podgorica with major European cities such as Paris, Rome, Barcelona, and Hamburg.

“In total, we will operate 24 routes to 13 countries. For the people of Montenegro, this means more travel opportunities, more affordable fares, and stronger connectivity to Europe,” Tischner said.
