Vuksanovic: Telekom case must also reach a conclusion before domestic courts

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – According to Adviser to the President of Montenegro for internal policy and economic development, Nebojsa Vuksanovic, the Telekom case, which has already been adjudicated before international courts and represents a symbol of corruption under the former regime, must also receive a conclusion before Montenegro’s domestic judiciary.

He stated that following announcements of a possible court outcome in the “Telekom” case, the public witnessed a media conflict between the judiciary and the prosecution instead of justice.

“That is unacceptable. A case that has already been ruled on by international courts and represents a symbol of corruption of the former regime must e resolved before domestic judicial institutions as well,” Vuksanovic said in a press release.

He noted that citizens voted out the decades-long regime in 2020 in order to dismantle the captured state and establish the rule of law.

“Six years later, they are disappointed with the delivery of justice — key actors are either not prosecuted at all, or they are arrested and released without solid evidence. Projects initiated during the former regime, such as the concession for Airports of Montenegro and Sveti Stefan, although criticized, continue to follow the same old pattern,” Vuksanovic stated.

According to him, this undermines public trust and fuels the dangerous narrative that “everyone is the same.”

Vuksanovic added that it is especially troubling that today, instead of answering questions before relevant institutions regarding the Telekom case, the “first million,” and offshore companies, the “former president is giving lessons about patriotism through the media.”

He said that the state is obliged to demonstrate that it has the strength to bring high-level corruption cases such as Telekom to a conclusion — lawfully, professionally, and without protecting political legacies.

“Any attempt to end this case through statutes of limitations or procedural manoeuvres is a direct blow to citizens’ trust and Montenegro’s European path,” Vuksanovic concluded.
