Veskovic: There was enough time, but no political will for open lists

Veskovic: There was enough time, but no political will for open lists

Podgorica, (MINA) - Proposals to introduce open lists in Montenegro are coming too late, said Marija Veskovic, advisor for public relations to the President of Montenegro, noting that the parliamentary Electoral Reform Committee is no longer functioning.

She said that the fact that there are several draft laws on open lists indicates that there is no real disagreement over this reform.

However, according to Veskovic, these proposals are arriving too late, given that the Parliamentary Electoral Reform Committee is no longer functioning.

Veskovic recalled that President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic submitted an initiative to the Parliament of Montenegro for the introduction of open lists more than a year ago, stressing that months were lost that could have been used to complete the electoral reform on time.

She added that nearly identical solutions are now being proposed only after the political actors have left the process in which they could have been adopted and when only a few weeks remain for their implementation.
