Podgorica, (MINA) – Current legislation does not stipulate that local and parliamentary elections must be held on the same day, said Marija Veskovic, adviser to the President of Montenegro, emphasizing that the decision on the date of parliamentary elections falls within the competence of the President.
Constitutional Court President Snezana Armenko previously told the MINA News Agency that Montenegro should not enter an election year without a full composition of the Constitutional Court and that the Montenegrin political scene is becoming increasingly complex and demanding.
“And the fact that, under new legal legislation, both local and parliamentary elections are to be held on the same day, gives me the right to expect that the election process will be very challenging for the Constitutional Court”, added Armenko.
Veskovic, in response to that statement, remarked that it is important for citizens to have clear and accurate information about the election rules, in order to avoid confusion and maintain confidence in the election process.
“Current laws do not stipulate that local and parliamentary elections must be held on the same day”, said Veskovic, and recalled that the mandate of the current convocation of the Parliament lasts until July 27, 2027.
Veskovic said that, in accordance with the Law on the Election of Councilors and MPs, parliamentary elections must be held no later than 15 days before the end of the mandate, which in this case means until July 12, 2027.
At the same time, she stated that the recent amendments to the legislation provide for local elections to be held on June 13.
“It is clear that there is no legal obligation to hold these elections on the same day, but that the date of parliamentary elections, will depend on the decision of the President of Montenegro and compliance with the prescribed deadlines”, Veskovic said.
