SMCG condemns police treatment of Petar Komnenic

Podgorica, (MINA) - The police’s behavior towards journalist Petar Komnenic is inappropriate and unnecessary, assessed the Media Trade Union of Montenegro (SMCG) adding that the authorities must ensure that their actions are measured and proportionate.

SMCG expressed concerns over the police’s treatment of Komnenic, host of the Nacisto TV show, following the broadcast on Television Vijesti.

“We believe that approaching the journalist outside his newsroom, immediately after the show, was inappropriate and unnecessary. Such action created an impression of urgency and repression, which in this case was not justified”, the press release said.

The Trade Union pointed out that if the authorities needed to collect certain information from the journalist, they should have done that without creating pressure or sending a message of intimidation.

“In particular, the question of the purpose of such urgent action arises, considering that the journalist had publicly explained the circumstances and content of the conversation during the show itself”, the press release added.

They recalls that Komnenic had already been previously threatened with prosecution from senior police officials.
