Sattler: EU expects Constitutional Court judges to be elected before summer break

Podgorica, (MINA) - The EU expects the Constitutional Court to be completed before the summer break, that is, that parliament should reach an agreemnet and make decisions by then, said Head of the EU Delegation in Montenegro, Johann Sattler.

In an interview with RTCG, he said that concrete results are expected from Montenegro in the judiciary, particularly through final verdicts.

Sattler, as RTCG portal reports, highlighted a positive shift reflected in reduced political influence on the judiciary and more merit-based appointments.

He expects that three or four chapters will be closed by the summer break, and that intergovernmental conferences will be organized more often in the coming period in order to meet the goal of closing all chapters by the end of the year.

Sattler remarked that a lot has already been done, but that the EU want sto see more, including constitutional changes, appointments of the Judicial Council members elected by a qualified majority, as well as Constitutional Court judges.

Asked if he believes that Montenegro will close all chapters by the end of the year and if that does not happen what the possible consequences might be, Sattler said that there are still eight months remaining.

He said that the European Commission supports the ambition of the government to complete the process by the end of the year, adding that it would not be the end of the world if the process extends into the following year.
