Russian Embassy: Statements in Parliament show Montenegro does not want to halt deterioration of relations with Russia

Podgorica, (MINA) – Statements made during the Prime Minister’s Questions, criticizing the internal situation in Russia and its policy towards Ukraine, demonstrate that Montenegro does not want to halt the further deterioration of Russian-Montenegrin relations, announced the Russian Embassy in Podgorica.

The Embassy stated this following a series of remarks heard in the Parliament, adding that many contained assessments of the internal situation in Russia and the implementation of a “special military operation” in Ukraine, in which Russia’s government system was described as “a regime that does terrible things to its people”.

“We consider these baseless and unrealistic statements, intended for an uninformed audience, to be additional evidence of the Montenegrin side’s desire to escalate the confrontation with Moscow and its reluctance to halt the deterioration of Russian-Montenegro relations”, the press release said.

It is added that representatives of the Montenegrin political establishment, who express dissatisfaction with the situation in Russia, have probably not been in that country for a long time and that, lacking reliable information, are forced to rely on Western propaganda narratives.

The Embassy said that the Russian side has repeatedly proposed a number of concrete steps to improve Russian-Montenegro relations, but that none of these initiatives have received an adequate response so far.

They said that Russia is committed to a quick end to the conflict in Ukraine and that it prioritizes political and diplomatic resolution.

“However, given the growing Russophobic campaign in the West, supported by its allies and emerging plans to inflict a strategic defeat on Russia, we foresee difficulties in achieving this goal. In the absence of any progress at the negotiating table, the special military operation will continue”, the press release said.

The Embassy noted that the topic of Russian-Montenegro inter-party relations was also discussed during the Prime Minister’s Questions.

“Unfortunately, it must be stated that the context and tone of the discussion did not leave much hope for the renewal of the bilateral Russian-Montenegro dialogue between political parties in the two countries”, the press release states.

According to the Embassy, the discussion essentially came down to mutual accusations between political opponents regarding their alleged sympathies towards Russia at the expense of Montenegro’s European integration aspirations.
