Podgorica, (MINA) - Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) MP Nikola Rakocevic has resigned from as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament of Montenegro.
Rakocevic said at the press conference that the government had crossed the opposition’s red line by adopting the laws on internal affairs and the National Security Agency.
“To believe that the creation of a police and totalitarian state is acceptable to the EU would be insane. Time will tell whether it was an unreasonable or deliberate move by the government. Because of all of the above, we will not participate in simulating democracy, which is why I am resigning from as Deputy Speaker of the Parliament”, Rakocevic said.
He added that resignations are only the first in a series of responses to what he described as anti-European and undemocratic behavior of the authorities.
Speaking about the work of the Comprehensive Electoral Reform Committee Rakocevic said that this body effectively does not exist, since that suits the government, and that the opposition therefore will not participate in its work.
Asked by the press if he would remain in the Commission for the selection of the president and members of the Central Election Commission (CIK), Rakocevic said that it is in the best interest of citizens to have a professional CIK, and that therefore he will remain in the process until it is completed.
Asked if Inquiry Committee chair Andrija Nikolic would resign before Friday, when the hearing of former high-ranking state official and DPS leader Milo Djukanovic is scheduled, Rakocevic replied that there is still time until Friday, adding that that claims they are resigning from their positions in order to prevent a meeting of the Inquiry Committee are malicious.
Rakocevic announced that the DPS MPs will attend the parliamentary sessions and participate in the work of parliament.
