PES: Identity issues can be discussed after EU accession

Podgorica, (MINA) - Topics that require broader social consultation and concern identity issues can be discussed only after fulfilling all obligations from the European agenda, the Europe Now Movement (PES) said.

The Democratic People’s Party (DNP) announced on Tuesday that it expects the proposal to amend the Law on State Symbols and the Statehood Day of Montenegro, which foresees the introduction of the tricolor as the people’s historical flag, to be on the agenda of a parliamentary session.

PES said that it fully respects the right of their opposition DNP colleagues to submit initiatives that are part of their political agenda without prior consultation, but stressed that they jointly adopted Barometer 26, which gives absolute priority to topics key for Montenegro’s European path.

“In this regard, our approach and openness to talks on this topic have not changed, and therefore topics that require broader social consultation and concern identity issues can be addressed after fulfilling all obligations from the European agenda”, said PES.

PES said that they believe that at this moment Montenegro must remain focused on strategic priorities, above all on the accession negotiations process, as well as on the goal of closing the remaining open chapters by the end of the year.
