Parliamentary opposition: Laws on ANB and internal affairs must be withdrawn

Podgorica, (MINA) – The parliamentary opposition will initiate a review of the constitutionality of the amendments to the Law on Internal Affairs before the Constitutional Court, if that legal act is adopted, the opposition representatives announced at the press conference.

They said that the draft amendments to the Law on Internal Affairs, as well as the draft Law on the National Security Agency (ANB), should be withdrawn from parliamentary procedure.

Social Democrat MP Nikola Zirojevic said that one detail from the opinion of the European Commission (EC) indicated that those two laws do not play a role in closing negotiation Chapter 24 in EU accession talks.

He announced that the opposition will initiate a review of the constitutionality of the amendments to the Law on Internal Affairs before the Constitutional Court, if the parliamentary majority insists and adopts “this monstrous solution” on Friday.

“I call on the Government to withdraw this monstrous anti-European law from the procedure, because it can create serious problems on our European path. The same applies to the Law on ANB, although it is much less problematic, but it is also not aligned with the EU acquis. It is necessary to withdraw both laws from the procedure”, said Zirojevic.

He stated that it is not the first time that the Democrats act against Montenegro’s European path.

Zirojevic recalled that he had called on Prime Minister Milojko Spajic to launch an initiative to dismiss Interior Minister Danilo Saranovic, and to reconsider participation of the Democrats in the Government and the parliamentary majority, “if he thinks that Montenegro should continue on its path towards the EU”.

Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS) MP Jevto Erakovic said that the previous days confirmed that it was not at all necessary to put the amendments to the Law on Internal Affairs and the draft Law on ANB on the parliamentary agenda so quickly.

When asked by reporters, he said that the position of the DPS and the opposition is clear that their further participation in parliamentary committees, even in the Committee for Comprehensive Electoral Reform, would be out of the question if anything would be done outside the law and the previous agreement.

When asked if the opposition would try to prevent the adoption of the law, he replied that he would “wait for tomorrow” adding that the opposition would act in a coordinated manner and would not allow any improvisations.

When asked if they had information that EC President Ursula von der Leyen had told Prime Minister Spajic that the Law on Internal Affairs should be withdrawn, he answered that he had no such information.

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if that were the position, because it would be a benevolent position towards Montenegro”, added Erakovic.
