Milatovic: Thirteenth of July award politicized again

Podgorica, (MINA) - The highest state award, the Thirteenth of July Award, has been once again abused for political purposes, said President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatovic, adding that such practice must be stopped.

Speaking about the events surrounding the awarding of the Thirteenth of July Award, Milatovic said in an interview with Pobjeda daily that for the citizens of Montenegro, July 13 is the foundation of Montenegrin identity.

“Unfortunately, this year again, the highest state recognition has been abused for political purposes. We are witnessing the devaluation of the importance of the Thirteenth of July Award, both in the eyes of the public and in regard to those who truly deserving of it”, said Milatovic.

He said that such practice must be stopped, and the award separated from any party driven decisions.

When asked whether Montenegro can become an EU member by 2028, Milatovic said that “Not only it can, but it must”.

He said that closing another chapter in the accession talks is an important signal that the process is moving in a positive direction.

“We know that Montenegro can do more. The next 18 months will be crucial. It is necessary for the Government and the parliamentary majority to demonstrate clear political will, stronger commitment to reforms, especially in the area of the rule of law and the functioning of institutions”, said Milatovic.

He said that there is no more room for excuses and political tricks.

“By the end of this year, we cannot afford a single mistake or a day of idleness”, said Milatovic.
