Milatovic: Montenegro’s EU membership historical task of current generation

Podgorica, (MINA) – President Jakov Milatovic opened the exhibition “20 Years in 20 Pictures” in Podgorica on Wednesday, marking two decades since the restoration of Montenegro’s independence, saying that Montenegro’s full membership in the EU is the historical task of the current generation.

Milatovic said that the exhibition, set up in front of the building of the President of Montenegro, is part of the program marking the jubilee of the restoration of independence and that through 20 selected photos it presents the most important political, sports, cultural and economic moments of modern Montenegro’s history.

“We tried to tell a story in 20 selected photos that depict political, sports, cultural and economic events, which we believe were important in the context of the previous 20 years since the restoration of Montenegrin independence”, said Milatovic.

He said that the exhibition presents 20 photos from the past, and that the 21st photo symbolizes the future, that is, the year 2028, when another great chapter in Montenegro’s history should be written through the country’s full membership in the EU.

“This is the historical task of our generation and I think we should all work together to achieve that goal”, said Milatovic.

Asked by a journalist whether he expects the process of appointing the missing judges of the Constitutional Court to be completed before the start of the summer recess, Milatovic said that EU Ambassador Johann Sattler also conveyed the clear expectations of the EU institutions and again called on political actors to show their commitment to Montenegro’s EU membership by electing two missing judges as soon as possible.

He recalled that he submitted an initiative to the Constitutional Court to assess the constitutionality of certain provisions of the law relating to the mandate of the court’s judges and said that he expects a quick response.

“The Constitutional Court is still not in full composition; we have one judge who is there under questionable circumstances. The most important would be for the Parliament Speaker to place the vote on both candidates for Constitutional Court judges on the parliamentary agenda as soon as tomorrow”, said Milatovic.

He said that he interprets the delays in resolving this issue as the most serious political obstruction of the rule of law in Montenegro and on its European path.
