Milatovic demands criminal accountability over UAE agreement

Tivat, (MINA-BUSINESS) – The agreement signed between Montenegro and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on cooperation in the field of tourism is problematic on several grounds, said Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic, calling for both political and criminal accountability for all those currently involved.

Speaking about the cooperation agreement on tourism and real estate development, Milatovic said he did not understand how the country had reached the point of considering something fundamentally unlawful.

“I would like to point out who is responsible – not just the Prime Minister, but every member of the Government and every MP in Parliament who votes for such an agreement. This concerns vital national interests, which are clearly being pursued through an unlawful process,” Milatovic stated in response to journalists' questions following the opening of the ESG Adria Summit in Tivat.

He said he expected a clear position from the EU on the matter.

“If the EU says this is in line with its acquis, then let’s go ahead and sign 20 such agreements,” Milatovic added.

He questioned who had the authority to decide on investors and, in the name of the people, bypass the law while invoking the rule of law.

“This is a textbook case of violation of the rule of law – something that is disastrous for Montenegro’s national interests and the interests of all its citizens. I call for full accountability, both political and criminal, for everyone currently involved in this,” Milatovic said.
