Milatovic calls for public decision-making on UAE agreement

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – President of Montenegro Jakov Milatovic said the session of the Constitutional Court at which initiatives to launch proceedings to assess the constitutionality of the law ratifying the cooperation agreement with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will be considered should be open to the public.

“I believe that, from the perspective of the public interest, it is very important that the session is open to the public,” Milatovic said.

While fully respecting the independence of the Constitutional Court, Milatovic believes that, in this particular case, it would be justified for each judge to individually state their position on the proposed decision and publicly explain their stance.

“I would like to point to the high level of interest from both the professional and the wider public regarding this issue, as well as the numerous controversial questions that accompanied the signing of this agreement. I already highlighted these issues with arguments when returning the law ratifying this agreement to Parliament for reconsideration,” Milatovic said.

He recalled that on 15 December the Constitutional Court organized a public hearing at which prominent law professors from Montenegro and abroad gave their opinions on the agreement, pointing to numerous legal shortcomings.
