Milatovic and Rutte: Montenegro remains a reliable ally

Podgorica, (MINA) - NATO and the EU are two sides of the same policy based on stability, rule of law and responsible international action, it was stated during the meeting between Montenegrin President Jakov Milatovic and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

According to the press release from Milatovic’s office, Milatovic reaffirmed Montenegro’s full commitment to the Alliance, the transatlantic partnership and cooperation with allies.

The focus of the meeting, according to the press release, was on the credibility of the Alliance, the stability of the region and the modernization of defense capacities.

“The visit of the Secretary General has a special significance as it is the first visit by a NATO Secretary General to Montenegro since membership in 2017, and it is additionally symbolic because it comes in the year when Montenegro celebrates the 20th anniversary of its independence”, the press release states.

The press release adds that during the meeting it was pointed out that one of the key foreign policy priorities of Montenegro is preserving the position of a credible and reliable member of NATO.

The need for the Defense and Security Council to focus on fulfilling obligations regarding the modernization of the Army of Montenegro, along with regular and coordinated institutional work, was emphasized, because national security issues must be above daily politics.

Rutte, according to the press release, praised the stability of Montenegro and its defense allocation, as well as its constructive role in the region.

“With the message that Montenegro, as a reliable ally, contributes to the security of the Western Balkans and the wider Euro-Atlantic area”, the press release says.
