Podgorica, (MINA) – The government and the opposition in Montenegro must cooperate on the country’s European path, said European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, noting that the tensions observed by Brussels are not good.
In an interview with Radio Television Niksic, Kos said that Montenegro is in the final phase of EU negotiations, but that there are still many challenges that must be resolved before accession.
According to her, although Montenegro started working on its European integration in 2012, the real progress has been made over past four years.
Kos said that all politicians should share a common vision of cooperation on the European path.
“You have achieved a lot, but the work is not finished yet. The focus must be on building democratic institutions and the rule of law. This is not only a project of the Government and the Parliament, but requires the cooperation of everyone, both the opposition and civil society”, said Kos.
She said that the tensions observed by Brussels are not good, adding that there is no alternative to cooperation.
Kos pointed out that Montenegro’s accession to the EU is not only a matter of meeting technical criteria and closing chapters, but also involving citizens and local communities.
