Brussels, (MINA) - The European Union (EU) will closely watch the implementation of the laws on internal affairs and the National Security Agency (ANB) in Montenegro, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said, stating that these laws should not only be harmonized with the EU, but also receive support in Montenegrin society.
During the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament (AFET) on Monday, Kos said that Montenegro continues to advance in its EU negotiations and that it has closed 14 chapters, which is more than a third.
“I was in Podgorica last month and I passed a message: focus on the quality of reforms and prioritize the fundamentals. In Podgorica I exchanged extensively both with government and the opposition on the two laws, on internal affairs and security, which not only should align with the EU acquis, but also genuine support across Montenegrin society”, Kos stated, RTCG portal reports.
As she added, the EU will closely watch how these laws are implemented.
Kos also said that the EU expects that the Serbian authorities will fully align its judicial laws with the Venice Commission’s recommendations and to resptore the independence of the media.
“We are increasingly worried about what is happening in Serbia. I share the concerns voiced by the MEPs from the Greens and the Renew group from laws that undermine the independence of the judiciary, to crackdowns on protesters, and recurrent meddling in independent media”, said Kos.
