Knezevic: DNP expects draft laws on national symbols and citizenship on April 7 agenda

Podgorica, (MINA) – Leader of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) Milan Knezevic said that he expects the party’s proposals for laws on national symbols and citizenship to be included on the agenda of the Parliament session scheduled for Tuesday.

Speaking at the press conference, Knezevic recalled that on February 2, that party submitted to the parliamentary procedure the amendments to the Law on National Symbols and the Statehood Day of Montenegro, proposing the introduction of the tricolor as a people’s historical flag.

“The new session of the Parliament is scheduled for April 7, and we suggested to Speaker Andrija Mandic that he include our proposal on the agenda, which means that, along with the national flag, the people’s flag should also be standardized and displayed on the buildings of the President, Parliament, local governments and public institutions”, said Knezevic.

He said that their proposal for a law on citizenship is almost completed, and will be soon submitted to the parliamentary procedure.

“Certainly, on April 7, I expect that our colleagues from the 44th Government, as well as from the opposition, will vote to include this on the agenda, and then let’s have a reasoned discussion. It would be good if, in the context of European integration, we make Marta Kos and Marijan Sarec happy, because I believe that they will wholeheartedly welcome any decision what the Parliament would adopt by acclamation, which reconciles Montenegro and leads to stability”, Knezevic said.

According to Knezevic, it remains unclear how the Government, which is in charge of foreign and domestic policy, did not propose constitutional amendments related to the Serbian language when it submitted changes concerning judiciary.

When asked by a journalist how he views the fact that candidates from the New Serbian Democracy (NSD) could take the DNP’s positions in the Government, Knezevic replied that these claims are at the level of media speculation.

He said that the appointment of the Minister of Sports should have already happened, but it hasn’t yet.

Asked about the talks with NSD, Knezevic said that Mandic had initially wanted to hold meetings of party bodies, while now DNP plans to do the same, as well as to form a team that will negotiate with NSD.

“My position is that it is not natural for one part of the coalition to be in the government and the other in the opposition, but depending on April 7 and how my colleagues will vote on this topic, we will decide on our further steps”, said Knezevic.
