Finance Ministry’s reforms recognized as a driver of growth

Podgorica, (MINA-BUSINESS) – Strong support for the reforms being implemented by the Ministry of Finance and recognition of Montenegro as a leader in European integration were expressed at the meeting between Finance Minister Novica Vukovic and World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia, Antonella Bassani.

Bassani stated that the World Bank views Montenegro as one of its key partners in the region, emphasizing that the country, as the most advanced candidate for European Union membership, is a particular focus of the international financial institution.

She highlighted her appreciation for Vukovic’s leadership and commitment to reform processes, noting that such an approach enables the effective implementation of joint projects and policies that stimulate economic growth, improve the business environment, and strengthen economic resilience.

Vukovic briefed his counterpart on the next stages of the reform agenda, noting that the establishment of a Fiscal Council is expected soon, alongside continued modernization of the tax administration and tax system, including consideration of introducing modern, or “smart,” taxes and fees in line with international best practices.

A significant portion of the discussion was dedicated to Montenegro’s European agenda. Vuković noted that 11 negotiating chapters fall under the Ministry of Finance’s jurisdiction, four of which have already been closed, while the remaining chapters have achieved a very high level of alignment with the European Union acquis. Expectations were expressed that the remaining chapters within the Ministry’s remit would be closed by the end of the year, further strengthening Montenegro’s position as the regional frontrunner in European integration.

Bassani confirmed that the World Bank remains a reliable and strong partner of Montenegro in implementing its development and reform priorities and announced new projects aimed at enhancing the tourism sector.
