European Alliance proposes shortening mandate of Capital City Assembly

Podgorica, (MINA) – The Capital City Assembly councilors group of the European Alliance (EA) submitted an initiative to all councilor groups to shorten the mandate of the local parliament.

Speaking at a press conference EA councilor Milos Maskovic said that the ruling majority in the Capital City no longer exists and that instead of 31, it is now supported by 26 councilors.

“Damaged inter-party relations within the ruling majority in the Capital City have led to an institutional and political blockade and made it impossible for further survival and implementation of key infrastructure projects, as well as the further development of the city, which has already slowed down”, Maskovic argues.

According to him, in such a situation, it is necessary to hold extraordinary local elections.

“That’s why we have submitted this initiative to all councilor groups, both from the opposition and the ruling parties”, Maskovic said.

When asked by reports from whom they expect support for the initiative, Social Democrat MP Boris Mugosa said that their initiative is a way to “normalize” political processes in Montenegro, in order to establish functioning in line with basic democratic principles.

“We are witnessing an incredible situation: someone who has lost the majority continues to propose decisions and expects support for them. The question arises as to why elections are held in Montenegro at all and whether this means that no government can lose legitimacy anymore”, said Mugosa.

He said that he expects support from all councilor groups.

When asked about a possible refusal by the Democratic People’s Party (DNP) and Free Montenegro to back the initiative, Mugosa reiterated that it is up to each party to decide how they would vote, but also up to citizens to draw conclusions based on those decisions.
