Dealing with past key to strengthening dialogue and understanding

 

Podgorica, (MINA) - The implementation of the project “Mapping memories through dialogue and victims’ stories” confirmed that initiatives dealing with the past are key to strengthening dialogue and understanding in the region, especially among young people, it was assessed at the presentation of the project’s activities and results.

Kristina Zugic from the Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) said that the project carries an important message of confronting the past and the legacy of the 1990s, and that through these and similar projects they are trying to address these issues in the most effective way.

She said that the project is supported through the regional project “EU support for trust building in the Western Balkans”, implemented by UNDP.

Speaking about the regional conference that was recently organized in Bijelo Polje, Zugic said that it was dedicated to the civilian victims of the war, and that it was attended by people who have been working on this issue for decades. 

She assessed that the EU accession should not be considered as a solution to all problems, adding that it is necessary to continuously work on overcoming them.

UNDP representative Ivan Boskovic said that the project aims to strengthen the rights and position of war crimes victims and their families.

He said that, apart from direct support to families, through legal and psychological empowerment, the project is aimed at creating lasting values ​​for the whole society.

YIHR representative Amina Muric said that through the project they prepared a digitized database of the Information and Documentation Center.

“It is one of the important activities for documenting all important information on war crimes committed during the 90s, that is, those addressed by our information and Documentation Center,” said Muric.
