Culafic: EUR 200,000 allocated for waste tire treatment plant

Podgorica, (MINA) - The Government adopted on Thursday the Draft amendment to the Law on Waste Management, the Low Carbon Development Strategy of Montenegro and information on the allocation of EUR 200,000 for the purchase of waste tire processing plants, said Minister of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North Damjan Culafic.

Speaking at the press conference following the Government session, he said that the draft amendments to the Law, Strategy and Information on the allocation of funds to the company Deponija Podgorica confirm the Ministry’s commitment to continue with concrete systemic solutions to long-standing challenges in the field of waste management and to further speed up the fulfillment of obligations under Chapter 27.

According to the press release from the Ministry of Ecology, Sustainable Development and Development of the North (MERS), he emphasized that the illegal disposal and burning of waste tires is a decades-long problem with serious consequences for the environment and public health.

Culafic added that, at the same time, Montenegro is facing demanding deadlines regarding the development and improvement of waste management infrastructure.

The proposed amendments, he added, enable a more rational and efficient use of generated revenue, without introducing new financial burdens for citizens and the economy, while strengthening the sustainability of the waste management system and environmental protection.

Speaking about the Low Carbon Development Strategy, Culafic said that it is a strategic document that, unlike the National Energy and Climate Plan, sets out a clear and achievable path towards climate neutrality by 2050, in accordance with the recently adopted Law on Climate Change and the international obligations assumed by the state.
